Reciprocity and alternatives Towards a modal interpretation of reciprocals

چکیده
Linear orderings are an open problem for a uni ed theory of reciprocity, which, in a nutshell, can be stated in the following terms. The semantic spectrum of each other is notoriously wide. Theoreticians agree that three schema are particularly signi cant in this spectrum: strong reciprocity, weak reciprocity and linear orderings (see e.g. Beck, 2001; Gillon, 2003). Linear orderings are irreconcilable with strong and weak reciprocity. Strong reciprocity is an all-all interpretation; weak reciprocity is an all-some interpretation (2b).

What Does the Strongest Meaning Hypothesis Mean?
The variety of interpretations exhibited by sentences with reciprocals is a longstanding challenge for semantic and pragmatic theories. This puzzle is related to some hard questions about the interpretation of plural predicates in general. In this paper we study the implications of relations between reciprocity and plurality for the account of reciprocals in Dalrymple et al. (1994). It will be ...
متن کاملFriederike Moltmann Reciprocals and Same~different:
Syntactically, each other and same~different both require a plural antecedent that is 'sufficiently close'. Semantically, both constructions, roughly speaking, involve a comparison between entities that are parts of a group denoted by a plural and are coarguments of some relation expressed by elements in the sentence. (1) has a reading in which John thinks that he loves Mary and Mary that she l...
متن کاملUnderstanding "Each Other"
Although natural language is ambiguous, various linguistic and extra-linguistic factors often help determine a preferred reading. In this paper , we show that model generation can be used to model this process in the case of reciprocal statements. The proposed analysis builds on insights from Dalrymple et al. 98 and is shown to provide an integrated, computational account of the interplay betwe...
متن کاملOn the sum of reciprocal Tribonacci numbers
In this paper we consider infinite sums derived from the reciprocals of the Fibonacci numbers, and infinite sums derived from the reciprocals of the square of the Fibonacci numbers. Applying the floor function to the reciprocals of these sums, we obtain equalities that involve the Fibonacci numbers.
متن کاملFrom Semantic Restrictions to Reciprocal Meanings
This paper proposes a new approach to the interpretation of reciprocal expressions using the Strongest Meaning Hypothesis of Dalrymple et al. (1998). We propose a system in which reciprocal meanings are derived directly from semantic restrictions using the SMH, and characterize this derivation process. We present methods to construct a linguistic test for the availability of a reciprocal meanin...
